'Virus' Sound Design and Score

Film and Game Inspired Soundscape

Electric City – This section was intended to be busy, vibrant and energetic with many different conventions of a city strewn together to make a collective texture and overall warped representation of what a futuristic city might sound like.

Baron Wasteland – I was inspired by games such as ‘Borderlands 2’ and ‘RAGE’ and the way they represented a barren landscape in the desert using sound design. I noticed that it wasn't the absence of sound that made the landscape sound baron but rather the timbre of the sounds used.

Water – I wanted this theme to be fluid, like water...... All the sounds in this section are performed in Cecilia 5 and are strung out with very few attacking sounds. The textural qualities are all inspired by sea sounds. There are foghorns, Waves and the faint sound of children playing on a beach from an underwater point of view.

Ice - is an extension of water in this piece. You hear the waves freeze and the waters motion slowly grind to a halt as an icy breath brings the listener into a cold brittle atmosphere with gentle pads.

Fire/ Industrial – This section draws inspiration from Horror films such as ‘Saw’ and ‘Silent Hill’. I have always been fascinated by the techniques that sound designers use to scare their audience and the way they create an ambience on screen.

I created different themes throughout the soundscape which are described below.....

This was a project for the module 'Vision and Sound' at the University of Huddersfield. The project involved me replacing all the sound design and foley with original recordings and creating a score to accompany the short film.
